Q: How do I setup my Audio Device in LIVE?
A: From the LIVE MENU, select PREFERENCES. Click on the AUDIO tab. Set the Audio input Device and Audio Output Device to the Interface, which should show up in the pull down menu. If the Device is not in the list, you may need to install necessary drivers to enable the device to work properly.
Next check the INPUT CONFIG and OUTPUT CONFIG to be certain you have any inputs or outputs you need enabled.
Q: How do I record audio in LIVE?
A: Change to the ARRANGEMENT VIEW by pushing the TAB key on your keyboard or selecting the 3 Horizontal Lines icon in the upper right. On the Right side of the ARRANGMENT VIEW you will see the Mixer section for the AUDIO TRACK where there’s a pair of INPUT choosers. By Default Live should have EXT IN or External Input selected. Under the External Input box is the physical inputs chooser. Set it to a single channel for mono recordings, or to a pair of inputs for stereo recording. By Default the Audio Track should have input monitoring set to AUTO. Record enable the Track by pushing the button with the black circle in it located in the upper right of the audio track. Now Arm the Live Set by pushing the button with the black circle in it in the transport bar at the top of the window. Now push the Play button or hit the spacebar and recording will begin.
Q: How do I add loops to LIVE?
A: Be sure you are looking at Live in the Session View. Use the Folder Icons on the left to navigate your computers directory for where you have loops or audio. Drag and drop found audio into any of the CLIP SLOTS to the right. You can play any clip by clicking on the triangle in the CLIP SLOT. To stop a CLIP from playing, there is a CLIP STOP button on each TRACK. It is the Square button above the input view in the TRACK.
Q: What is the difference between the arrange view and the clips view?
A: The Clips View is used for pulling over or creating and editing multiple Loops. It’s easy to trigger many different loops on or off and to create different combinations. It’s a little more open for real-time experimentation.
The Arrangement view is similar to what we have come to expect out of a traditional DAW. This is where Audio and MIDI tracks can be recorded. This is also where Clip Based performances can be recorded and then edited to fine tune an arrangement.
Q: How do I add virtual instruments or effects to my tracks?
A: On the left side of LIVE Are a Live Device and a VST Plug-ins viewer. To add effects to tracks or clips, drag and drop the desired plug-in over the clip or track. The plug-in will open automatically. If you need to get back to the Plug-in Later, choose the clip or track, and then push the Tab in the Lower right with the tracks name. It will also have a MINI view of the plug-ins being used.
