Pro Tools FAQ

Here is a FREE FAQ tutorial for Digidesign Pro Tools

Q: How do I export audio from Pro Tools to make a CD?

A: Using the SELECTOR TOOL, highlight the area of your session that you want to Export…
Then, from the FILE MENU choose BOUNCE TO DISK. Bounce settings MUST be FILE TYPE=WAV,
FORMAT=STEREO INTERLEAVED, RESOLUTION=16, SAMPLE RATE=44100… This will create a file that you can then burn to a blank CD using any CD burning application. NOTE: Pro Tools itself will NOT burn a CD.

Q: How do I get REASON to work WITH Pro Tools?

A: Boot ProTools FIRST. From the TRACK menu in ProTools, choose NEW and create 1 STEREO AUX  INPUT. Now, go to the MIXER and from the INSERT section of the newly created track choose MULTICHANNEL PLUGIN> INSTRUMENT>REASON (stereo). Reason will now boot. You will now hear the AUDIO output of REASON thru the newly created AUX INPUT. You can now “program” in REASON or trigger individual instruments in the REASON rack via MIDI from midi
Tracks created in ProTools.

Q: How do I create and play a virtual instrument in Pro Tools?

A: From the TRACK menu in ProTools, choose NEW and create 1 STEREO AUX  INPUT. Now, go to the MIXER and from the INSERT section of the newly created track choose MULTICHANNEL PLUGIN> INSTRUMENT> choose your instrument. To PLAY the instrument… From the TRACK menu, choose NEW and create 1 MIDI track (mono/stereo does NOT apply). Go to the MIXER
And set the OUTPUT of the newly created MIDI track to the INSTRUMENT that you just created.

Q: How do I record audio in Pro Tools?

A: Assuming your AUDIO INTERFACE is setup correctly… From the TRACK menu in ProTools, choose NEW and create 1 MONO AUDIO TRACK. “Enable” recording by clicking on the RED “R”
On the newly created AUDIO TRACK… It will FLASH, indicating that it is “READY” to record.
Now, go to the transport bar (either floating OR the one at the top) and click on the RECORD button… It will also FLASH. When you are ready to record press the PLAY button.

Q: Why can’t I hear my keyboard synthesizer in Pro Tools?

A: You must create an AUX INPUT or AUDIO TRACK to hear your HARWARE (real, not virtual)
Keyboard instrument. That Keyboard instrument must then be plugged in to your AUDIO INTERFACE. IMPORTANT… Midi is NOT for AUDIO.

Q: How do I add effects to my tracks in Pro Tools?

A: Assuming that you want to EQ a vocal for example… Go to the MIXER and locate your vocal track. From the INSERTS area choose: PLUGIN> EQ> 4 Band Eq. The audio of this track will now pass through this newly created EQ plugin… Adjust to taste!

Q: What is a bus in Pro Tools?

A:  A “BUS” in “Audio Speak” is a method of routing audio from one place to another within A MIXER. This is true of big old analog mixing consoles as well as “virtual” mixing consoles like the one in ProTools. Sometimes referred to as a SEND. Where a SEND describes a more specific function, the SEND must use a “BUS” to get where its’ going. See next entry.

Q: What a send in Pro Tools?

A: A SEND takes (a certain amount of) audio from one place and “SENDS” it to another. EXAMPLE: If you want some REVERB on a vocal track, you would use a SEND to literally “SEND” some of the sound of the vocal to a REVERB that resides in another part of your MIXER. NOTE: you could INSERT a REVERB on your vocal track but, this is an inefficient
Use of the REVERB .

Q: What is a Master fader and why do I need one?

A: A Master Fader is a fader that ALL of the audio in your session can pass through…
Think of it as “The Big Volume Knob with benefits”. The benefits are the ability to add PLUGINS to your ENTIRE mix such as EQ and LIMITING. NOTE: When you create a MASTER FADER in ProTools… All tracks AUTOMATICALLY pass through it.

Q: Why am I getting DAE errors in Pro Tools?

A:  More often than not, this has to do with your PLAYBACK ENGINE settings… From the SETUP menu choose PLAYBACK ENGINE. Remember, not all computers are the same and the settings in here are designed to let you get the most out of your particular machine. It’s too complex to get into here but, you can’t mess things up too badly in this settings area.         Experiment! TIP: Write down the current settings BEFORE you start experimenting.
